September 2025 Reading Recap

There were a few good books this month and one great book! I am STINGY with my 5 star reads. I'll hand out 4 stars left and right, but that 5th one?? That baby has to be EARNED! A while back on a stuff your kindle day, I got The Ever King by L. J Andrews. I've recently updated my Goodreads profile to include what books I had on my kindle to help cut down on my TBR of books I already own. I came across this one and decided to read it. Immediately, I was hooked, no pun intended.
I had a strange variety of genre's this month because I wanted to participate in Jess Massey's (Hustle Sanely) Fall Bookish Bingo Board! So far, I've knocked off

Now, I love me a good Pirate's of the Caribbean movie marathon. I have watched every single movie, multiple times. I can quote it, text the best memes, and more but have I ever thought about picking up a pirate themed book?? Nope. However, when I read this blurb on Goodreads - "Welcome to the passionate world of the Ever Kingdom where pirates, sirens, and fae collide with Vikings in a dark fantasy romance between a villain and the innocent princess who holds his heart." I thought it sounded exactly like a book I'd enjoy. Almost immediately, I knew this would be a high star read for me. I started highlighting from the very beginning and was enamored with Erik.
"'Such venom.' With one knuckle, I stroked her cheek. 'Careful with your threats of my untimely death, love, or you might end up stealing my heart.'”
I realized about 3/4ths into it that this would not be the only book and it had to have been a series. Much to my surprise, after looking into it, sure enough it was a series and it is being re-released because it was picked up by a traditional publisher! I cannot wait to continue this series and learn what comes next for Erik.

Next up, I listened to the audiobook Matched by Ally Condie. I am a few weeks into writing this recap from the time I finished this audiobook and I still don't quite know if I liked this book or not. For that bookish bingo list, I needed a Sci-fi or dystopian and neither of these are usually books I go for. Occasionally, I'll read them. I mean, I read the entire Uglies series as well as The Hunger Games series but it isn't my typical first choice. There was also a bingo square for a library book. I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and get an audiobook that fit both categories to listen to while at work. Initially, I felt that this was like every other dystopian book - same plot line, same drama, etc. It did get a bit better as far as the storyline and I did find myself wondering what was in store for the characters but I didn't jump right into book two after I finished. Overall, it was a 3 star read for me.

I got a second audio book in during September. It was Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. First off, PLEASE read the trigger warnings for this book! I love a good thriller. Especially for an audiobook! I have ADHD and cannot stay focused long enough for any genre other than thriller or cheesy romance when it comes to audiobooks. I thought this would be great for entering the 'ber months... I read a few reviews, saw the warnings and started it with caution. I'd also like to make mention that I am a true crime podcast junkie - Morbid, Crime Junkie, Casefile... ALL podcasts I listen to (and love!!) regularly! But this book... combined with audio?? It was hard to listen to. There are a lot of graphic descriptions of very disturbing situations and those warnings and triggers should NOT be taken lightly. This ended up being three stars for me because while disturbing, it kept my attention and I didn't see the ending coming. The loss of two stars is because I felt like it should have ended sooner than it did. I liked the ending, but it took too long to get there. It was also kind of hard to follow in places but that could just be because of my ADHD, and again, I'm stingy with those 5 stars!

Lastly, I started Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer. This is a book I received in my monthly bookclub box! I didn't get very far into it in September and officially finished it in October so my review will come in my October recap post.
Have you read any of these books? If so, which ones and what did you think about them? I have been holding off on Enigma by RuNyx for October and it's one of my most anticipated books for next month!
