May 2025 Reading Recap

My life is... well, it's chaotic. I work a full-time 9 to 5. I have a side business and I run cattle. There isn't a lot of downtime. But finding (*cough* making *cough*) time to fit in books really helps me slow down mentally and not run myself ragged. I certainly didn't get to as many books as I'd have liked, but one of the ones that I did finish... 👀

I started the month with Quicksilver. I had heard of this book on Bookstagram but didn't know much about it. I knew the series was Fae and Alchemy, so I knew it was right up my fantasy-loving alley! I bought it one day from Walmart on a whim, and it's kind of sat around on my shelf. And to be honest, it wasn't one I had planned on reading anytime soon because I knew that book two wasn't coming out until this fall, and I really didn't want to get into another Empyrean situation of waiting YEARS to finish a book series... but then I kept seeing Instagrammer Tanja @millionsofworlds talk about how Kingfisher was far superior to Xaden. "Surely that can't be true..." I naively thought. I am all about The Empyrean. I mean, it's my adult equivalent of Harry Potter. But after seeing multiple stories from Tanja and others across Instagram, I decided I would start Quicksilver... and let me tell you, I am itching for Brimstone! It did take me a while to get through just due to day-to-day life and not having many evenings off as I am in a push season for the side hustle. Because of that, I did follow Quicksilver up with an easy sports romance!
"He is the storm. You are the peace that must come after it. Tell me, do you believe in the fates, Alchemist?"

I read The Summer Playbook on my Kindle, and it was a quick, easy four-day read for me. I found the characters funny, and it was very lighthearted. There are some heavy topics, but overall, it was a very enjoyable read.
"We all have our own hangups, but truthfully, we never really understand how others view us, so we have to focus on how we see ourselves. Because at the end of the day, we spend the most time with our inner thoughts."

I then tried to read The Secrets You Keep, and this book might be my very first DNF. 😳 There are SO. MANY. DANG. CHARACTERS! Now, there is a family tree that is provided. However, being that this was also on my Kindle, I found it cumbersome to click back to it and then try to get back to my spot where I was reading and got confused (yet again) on who this character was. I finally got mad and just stopped reading it... BUT I am still thinking about this book, so I might pick it back up at another time.

I didn't get the two remaining books finished by the end of the month, but I was reading Riddle on my Kindle and listening to Kingdom of The Wicked on Libby. Riddle is very interesting so far. To me, it reads more of a YA book but it is listed as Fantasy and Mystery genre on Goodreads. Early into the storyline, it definitely had an eerie feeling to it and I had to make sure I only read it during my lunch-break as it made my overactive imagination picture all kinds of things at nighttime. 🤣 Now that I've read a little further, I'm not as on-edge. I certainly am invested and want to know all about this other world that the main character has found herself inside of.

Lastly, as I write this, I am 1:15:42 into Kingdom of the Wicked. I am curious about this book, but I'm slowly learning that I simply cannot listen to fantasy books on audio. There are too many nuances and a lot of world-building that my poor ADHD brain just can't keep up with. There are some pretty good reviews on Goodreads that make me very interested. I'll give it another hour or so on audio, but I might have to purchase this as a physical book or ebook.
I didn't realize there were FOUR books for this month! I thought it was maybe three. I am very blessed with a long lunch break and a job where I can listen to audiobooks throughout my day. If it weren't for that, I'd probably just have Quicksilver and my soft-DNF. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this month's stack!
